City of Downey, CA, Aug 31 Southern California Rehabilitation Services/Southeast Center for Independent Living representatives and clients gathered at the organization's office in the Barbara Riley Community & Senior Center in Downey to thank Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) for her work in Congress to secure federal funding for their new computer lab. http://roybal-allard.house.gov

The $100,000 federal funds secured by the congresswoman were used to establish a computer lab /workshop to teach and assist clients with disabilities to learn Microsoft Office programs, Internet access and typing skills. The organization purchased 12 computers, printers, desks, chairs and other devices such as magnifying screens for the visually-impaired that assist physically-challenged youth and adults to become computer literate.

Southern California Rehabilitation Services (SCRS) was founded in 1979 by a group of individuals with disabilities. Since then, SCRS programs have served over 10,000 individuals with disabilities within Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties. SCRS is one of the Centers for Independent Living. The mission of SCRS is to empower persons with disabilities to achieve their personalized goals through community education and individualized services that provide the knowledge, skills, and confidence to maximize their potential and improve their quality of life.  The organization serves persons with disabilities in Southeast Los Angeles County and beyond, including residents of Bell, Bell Gardens, Bellflower, Downey, Huntington Park, Commerce, Cudahy, and Maywood in the 34th Congressional District. Services include:  advocacy, peer counseling, housing assistance, independent living skills training, help with assistive technology; and vocational skills training.
