Tuesday, January 10, 2012 Southern California Rehabilitation Services Staff, Hector Ochoa, Jose Solorzano, Deserie Ortiz, Terrance Henson, Priscilla Flores and volunteer Antonio Arreguin made a stand in Downtown Los Angeles, at the State Office, together with grassroots organizations from various constituencies including: Seniors, People with Disabilities, Students, Childcare Recipients and Workers, Medical/Healthy Families recipients, and Independent Living Centers, to respond to the devastating cuts to the California State Budget Governor Brown proposed on January 5, 2012.
SCRS, California Partnership, The HHS Coalition, and ILC’s across the state organized community responses to the proposed budget all over California including cities such as: San Francisco, San Bernardino, Fresno, and Los Angeles, to say enough is enough; the cuts to our programs over the years and leading up to today have stripped our services, our families and our communities to their bare bones and can no longer continue to live independently if these cuts continue to cumulate.
Since 2008, Health and Human Services programs such as Medi-Cal, IHSS, Healthy Families, CalWorks and numerous other programs have endured drastic cuts totaling $15 billion dollars and once again Gov. Brown is attacking the social safety net in order to balance the state budget by making cuts totaling $4.2 billion dollars with an additional $5.4 billion in trigger cuts, if California does not pass a revenue package to help remedy the cuts, to health and human services, public safety and education.
Over 100 people in our communities and 18 media outlets including: L.A. Times, KABC, KNBC, La Opinion and Univision, to name a few, united together in front of the Governor’s office in Los Angeles to make officials and the public know that we will do what it takes to make sure that the services that people with disabilities rely on will no longer be the scapegoat for the growing budget deficit in California and we will continue to make our voices heard for however long it may take for the betterment of society and the social safety net!
